Imagine a mother who considered her son the most precious thing in the world — only for that same son to bludgeon her to death with a hammer. Then, he lived with her body in the same house for two months, acting as if nothing had happened. This is not a fictional tale, but a horrifying real-life tragedy that took place in Pembroke Dock, Wales.
This case is not only an example in the world of crime, but it also reveals how drug addiction, financial stress, and mental issues can destroy even the most sacred bonds.
Mother-Son Relationship: A Foundation of Love Turned into Bitterness
Judith Rhead, 68, was a caring woman and a former assistant social worker who always helped others. Suffering from COPD and recovering from foot surgery, she became dependent on her only son, Dale Morgan, 43. Dale had moved in with her as her carer. From the outside, they looked like a close family — listening to music together and spending time with each other. Judith lovingly called him her “blue-eyed boy,” the center of her life.
But behind closed doors, a dark reality was unfolding. Judith’s diary and notes revealed that Dale was addicted to opioids. He was stealing her prescription medication and money, and lying about his job and car. Despite everything, Judith kept him at home and tried to help him, even though his presence caused her immense mental stress. She gave him 43 years of unconditional love and sacrifice — but received only bitterness in return.
The Moment of Horror: 14 Hammer Blows
It happened during the COVID-19 lockdown in mid-December 2020 (between 11 and 18 December). In their flat on Market Street, Pembroke Dock, Judith was in the bedroom when Dale picked up a hammer and attacked her mercilessly. He struck her 14 times on the head, fracturing her skull and causing internal bleeding. Judith fell to her knees, possibly begging for her life, and there were defensive wounds showing she tried to protect herself.
After the brutal attack, Dale placed a plastic bag over her head and tied it with an electrical cord. He left her body near the bed, partially undressed, with the hammer and bloodstains still at the scene.
Forensic experts noted that the cold winter air (he kept the window open) helped mummify the body and reduced the smell of decomposition. Psychologists say Dale was in a state of denial — behaving as if the murder had never happened.

Cover-Up: Using COVID as an Excuse
For nearly two months, Dale continued living in the flat with his mother’s body. He lied to neighbors and friends, saying:
- “Mum is in quarantine because of COVID.”
- “She is ill and in hospital.”
Because of the lockdown, no one could easily check on her. Neighbors noticed the bedroom window was wide open throughout the freezing winter, but Dale gave excuses.
Discovery and Justice: The Destruction of a Family
On 20 February 2021, concerned friends contacted the police after not seeing Judith for months. Officers forced entry into the flat and found the body. Dale was arrested.
In Swansea Crown Court, Dale pleaded guilty to murder. On 4 October 2021, Judge Paul Thomas sentenced him to life imprisonment with a minimum term of 21 years and 6 months. The judge told him:
“This was a savage and sustained attack on a defenceless woman — your own mother. She adored you, defended you even when you stole from her, and tried to help you. You repaid 43 years of devotion by bludgeoning her to death with a hammer.”
Senior Investigating Officer Jean Butler described it as a “horrific attack by her own son in her own home.” Judith’s niece Gemma said the family could never accept what happened and that Judith was a kind-hearted, respectable woman. Her body was identified partly by a dragonfly tattoo.
